Traditional Land Owners: Darug tribe of the Darug nation
“Designing a sports facility in a public park presents a few conundrums; how can a building be robust and hard-wearing but at the same time warm, welcoming and inclusive? How can it express its ‘publicness’ and offer something to the community when the majority of the time it will be shut?
Key functional elements were split between two adjacent pavilions sit side by side on a heavy stepping base. The project is experienced ‘in the round’ so we sought a sculptural quality. The relationship between pavilions is one of counterpoint; roof forms acting as playful markers of internal activity.
Brick unifies the project, each pavilion space finding its poetic point of difference in response to need; ventilation, illumination, animation and scale. Poetic subtleties play an important role; the rough-cut bricks adding warmth and texture whilst playing poetically with the missing bricks where ventilation is required.”
JURY CITATION
The tranquillity of the Kings Langley Cricket Club and Amenities is a delightful contribution to its community. Restrained, hardworking, humble and referencing its suburban Blacktown materiality and typology, the project makes no grand statements, but provides a beautifully crafted community building.
Purposefully sited on the oval and community interface edge, and resisting the elevated viewing platform, the composition of club facilities establishes equitable roots on the ground plane with its community. Together with the landscaping, it brings together a blended and integrated design that has been embraced by its community. The council is also to be congratulated on its purposeful vision to invest in a quality community facility.
Client perspective:
How does the design benefit the way you live/work/play/operate/educate/other?
The new Kings Langley Cricket Club is a community gem. It captures with confidence all the traditional values and expectations we have of a local district cricket club but portrays them in a contemporary, inventive fashion. It gives the facility its own prsonality and identity.
As a public building its longevity and serviceability is underwritten by robust detailing and material choice with composition and siting establishing its ‘public presence’.
The design establishes a new ‘club cricket’ iconography whilst retaining intimacy through attention to detail. Our residents and users love it for the imagination it captures.
