Walkley House | Robin Boyd
Traditional Land Owners: Kaurna People
Designed in the International Style by Robin Boyd for commissioning client and architect Gavin Walkley. Built to meet postwar construction restrictions, the ground floor living spaces are very compact with extensive windows connecting the spaces to the garden.
The upper level cantelevers on three sides to accommodate three bedrooms and a study. This creates a distinctive form from the street and caused significant debate at the time. Currently owned by Gavin’s granddaughter, the Walkley house retains a high level of integrity, from its plan form to feature door and wall colours. The upper ceilings, which were also distinctively coloured, have now been painted white.
Samples of the original colours remain within the built-in joinery, into which air conditioning has been sympathetically installed. The kitchen has also been gently enhanced. Otherwise, Gavin would feel quite at home.
