2022 Tasmanian Architecture Awards
Located on a hillside near Mount Nelson, Hobart, View House by Archier is a celebration of Tasmania’s native landscape. The impressive views down the River Derwent allow its occupants, a retired couple, to age in style.
View House signified a key milestone for the clients: a home celebrating a life well-lived, with the flexibility to support them in their later years.
The home acts as a frame for the uniquely Tasmanian environment, with expansive glass windows framing views of the city to the courtyards throughout the home, which back onto dolerite hillside.
Landscaping blends the building into the site. Flowering plants drape over the facade and will, over time, begin to act as a camouflage for the home among the native bushland.
View House is an enduring home that offers unexpected moments of joy while delivering on the core client request of being an adaptive space to age with dignity.
Client perspective:
“View House has been a spectacular success for us and is a triumph of design. From the clever siting to maximise the view through to the use of beautiful natural materials and textures, the house is exactly what we sought.
The separate, but strongly interconnected, living zones offer privacy and flexibility, yet retain communication. The top floor offers spacious and light-filled daily living space on a single level, while the downstairs guest area provides the possibility for carer accommodation, allowing ageing-in-place.
View House has given us a blend of exceptional design and outstanding practicality which precisely suits our needs.”
