Australian Pavilion, Expo 2020 | bureau^proberts

Public Architecture

Brisbane architectural firm bureau^proberts was commissioned by the Australian Government to design the pavilion which will host Australia’s participation in Expo 2020 Dubai from 1 October 2021 to 31 March 2022. The design depicts, in stylised form, an expression of Australia’s distinctive landscape and animated skies via a cloud-like form suspended over folding
timber.

Liam Proberts, bureau^proberts’ Managing and Creative Director, describes the open-air spaces of the pavilion as key to capturing an Australian sensibility in the architecture. “Sheltered by an expansive, cloud-like form, we’ve created a large, open gathering space at the heart of the pavilion,” he says. “It offers a welcoming invitation to all visitors, echoing the warm and inclusive nature of Australians.”

The Australian Pavilion is expected to attract 1.3 million visitors across six months, in addition to business, industry and government representatives who will be hosted in a dedicated VIP facility that overlooks the expansive forecourt.

Client perspective:  How does the design benefit the way you live/work/play/operate/educate/other?

“The Australian Pavilion at Expo 2020 Dubai is a place for minds to connect for future global collaborations, to create
innovative solutions for global challenges.

‘Blue Sky Dreaming’, captured through the architecture of bureau^proberts, takes inspiration from the cumulus cloud, which is a sign of clear weather and symbolic of the opportunities unique to Australia.

The Australian Pavilion is entwined with stories of Australian invention, talent and creativity. Beyond artwork and design, the pavilion experience and hospitality embody the spirit of Australia. bureau^proberts’ magnificent design has enabled Australia to welcome the world with open arms at Expo 2020 Dubai.”
