National Commendation for Interior Architecture – 2021 National Architecture Awards
Traditional Land Owners: Wurundjeri People of the Kulin Nation
The architect and his family lived in this street for eight years prior to building this home and they were acutely aware of their surroundings.
The project emerged slowly and demonstrates a commitment to sustainability and an acknowledgement of broader heritage considerations. The interiors are integral to the architectural resolution and provide a stimulating living environment complemented by the participation of art and extensive attention to detail.
Observations over time have reinforced the importance and value of neighbourly social interaction. The interiors play an equally important role in the presentation of the house to the street frontages and they assist in reconciling social activation that is often lost behind the facades of traditional heritage dwellings.
This is a unique house which acknowledges temporary occupation and it endeavours to enrichen the heritage place through personal and specific interpretation.
Client perspective:
How does the design benefit the way you live/work/play/operate/educate/other?
“The project also provided us with an opportunity to embrace cultural, social and environmental sustainability commitments. The making of the home has contributed to the community through Artistic engagement and reinforced the importance and value of neighbourly social interaction through the strategic location of the living spaces and communal seating at the streetscape interface. Through specific insight this house endeavours to reconcile the values of the surrounding heritage context and extend the history of the site and place through our temporary occupation and personal interpretation”.
