As we wrap up the year, hear from our NSW Chapter Director, Lisa King, and our NSW Chapter President, Elizabeth Carpenter, on our recent efforts regarding the proposed Building Bill.
Building Bill
We continue to engage with the government as the building reform consultation is underway. The Institute welcomes James Sherrard who commenced in the role of Building Commissioner on Monday 2 December. We look forward to meeting with the Commissioner in the New Year. We continue to meet regularly with Building Commission NSW and can now provide an update on the Building Bill, including the proposed repeal of the Architects’ Act.
SUBMISSIONS
The Government is still considering the content of the submissions received and we expect an update in early 2025.
Read our RAIA Submission for Proposed Building Sector Regulatory Reforms – October 2024.
Ongoing consultation
Detailed consultation will continue with BCNSW’s Industry Reference Group throughout 2025 (we are a member of the group). The BCNSW has committed to working closely with the Institute and with the Architects’ Registration Board to further develop the proposed reforms.
Draft Regulations
Advocacy
In recent months, the Institute has also met with the Opposition Leader, the Shadow Minister for Building, the Greens, and Independents. We will continue to engage with Government as the building reforms develop and will provide updates to members as information comes to light.
Additionally, we met last week with the Chiefs of Staff of the Premier and the Minister for Planning. We now have the opportunity to submit more detailed information to Government in the New Year and we look forward to assisting Government as they navigate the difficulties associated with the housing crisis.
