Message from Elizabeth Carpenter

Congratulations to the NSW Chapter’s newly re-elected Chapter President Elizabeth Carpenter FRAIA.

As we begin 2025 in earnest, and I am now confirmed to continue in my role as the NSW Chapter President, I would like to extend my thanks to all our members who have supported me during the recent elections.

The Institute’s strength lies in its members, and during this incredibly challenging time for the profession, it is critical that we leverage our design thinking and collaborate as a unified profession.

The start of this year has already underscored the urgency of addressing climate change, highlighted by the devastating fires in Los Angeles — a catastrophe that has impacted thousands of lives and will have far-reaching implications.

I am enthusiastic about the work that we will do together this year as a community of professionals. The NSW Chapter Council has some new elected members bringing fresh perspectives and energy alongside the current experienced voices — a great representation of the diversity of our profession.

I am also looking forward to collaborating with our committees and the National Council. Our first meeting with the new team is coming up next week on Tuesday 4th February, and I want to extend my heartfelt thanks to those Councillors whose terms have ended, for their dedication, insights, and hard work.

This year promises to be very exciting in NSW, with the National Conference in May. This is a fantastic platform to celebrate architecture and the various committees have some great ideas in motion.

Building on the incredible work of our past President, Adam Haddow — now the National President-Elect — and supported by the NSW Chapter Staff headed up by Lisa King, the Executive Director, the team is committed to increasing the presence of the Institute and raising awareness of the value our profession adds to the built environment. At the same time, we recognise the challenges we all face, including navigating an unpredictable economic climate, adapting to changing legislation, and confronting the ongoing devaluation of our profession, yet continuing to be innovative and rise to the many challenges we encounter. In light of all of the above, we acknowledge the importance of collegiate support.

As we move into the new year, I am always open to hearing your thoughts and feedback, and I welcome any help with addressing challenges as they come up.

You can either contact the  NSW Chapter staff, myself, or any of the NSW Chapter Councillors.
