The Australian Institute of Architects is delighted to announce the appointment of Jane Cassidy as the National President Elect.
Current ACT Chapter President, Ms Cassidy, was appointed by the Institute’s National Council to take up the role. This will see her assume the role of National President following the Institute’s 2024 Annual General Meeting, likely to be held in May from mid-2024.
The Institute’s National Council Chair Shannon Battisson said Ms Cassidy was an outstanding choice for National President Elect, given her steadfast commitment to the built environment over many years.
“We thank Ms Cassidy and the other candidates for their commitment to architecture and the Institute,” she said.
“As the peak body for professionals in the built environment, we rely on the dedication and efforts of our volunteer leaders to represent us. Year after year they achieve great outcomes for architects in Australia, and beyond.”
Ms Cassidy is a director at GHDWoodhead Architecture with more than 25 years’ experience in architecture, education and public infrastructure. She is currently on the Institute’s Board.
She has cited the development of sustainable strategies to achieve net zero in the urban and built environments as a key priority, as well as accelerating architectural excellence.
“As architects, we need to transcend demonstration projects and deliver high quality inclusive and sustainable built environments for all.”
Ms Cassidy will take up the position as National President Elect at the close of the 2023 Annual General Meeting on May 31 and will be on the Board until 2026.
The Australian Institute of Architects is the peak body for architecture in Australia representing almost 14,000 members globally.
Jane Cassidy is GHD Asia-Pacific Technical Services Leader for Architecture & Design and a Director of GHDWoodhead, the largest architectural practice in Australasia (WA100 by revenue) operating within a multidisciplinary architecture, urban design, engineering, project management, digital and advisory business.
With more than 25 years’ experience across a diverse range of project typologies, Jane is highly regarded for her effective stakeholder engagement, particularly within complex large-scale institutional environments. Working as part of an integrated project consulting team at GHD, Jane leads the design of built environments that perform aesthetically, functionally, economically, socially and environmentally.
Jane Cassidy Biography
Jane has served on the Australian Institute of Architects ACT Chapter Council for six years, including two years as ACT President. She is also a Director on the Australian Institute of Architects board. Through these roles she has fostered an inclusive and collaborative approach to advocacy and policy development including social equity, housing affordability and choice, heritage, sustainability, active transport, design and building quality.
Jane believes architects have an important role to play promoting and implementing sustainable strategies that benefit all in our community, as we transition to a net zero carbon circular economy future.
Jane is committed to upholding the standards of architectural excellence across the professional continuum from higher education, through registration and beyond. She is a member of the Architects Accreditation Council of Australia (AACA) Standing Panel for the Accreditation of architecture schools and a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (SFHEA) bringing extensive architectural education experience including 10 years’ in teaching and course accreditation.
As National President of the Australian Institute of Architects Jane will foster a robust, strategic and inclusive approach to identify key issues and opportunities for the Institute to amplify the voice of architecture.
