Architectural innovator and entrepreneur Rodney Eggleston has been recognised for his exceptional and diverse body of work, winning the Australian Institute of Architects’ prestigious National Emerging Architect Prize.
Announced at the National Architecture Awards in Brisbane tonight, founder and principal of March Studio in Melbourne, Mr Eggleston, won the prize for his work across the built environment and interiors, education and public engagement.
The Emerging Architect Prize, supported by Prize Partner AWS, highlights the contribution of the best of the next generation of Australian architecture and design.
Institute National President Helen Lochhead said Mr Eggleston had well and truly ‘emerged’ with a range of industry projects that showcased the value of collaborative architecture.
‘Rodney’s work with March Studio has pushed the boundaries on design and use of materials, incorporating art into architecture,’ she said.
‘He has developed distinctive, innovative work that shines at a national and international level.
‘Rodney is also passionate about the role of the architect and collaborating with other designers and artists to create pioneering contributions across retail, residential, cultural, hospitality and furniture design.’
After graduating from RMIT University he founded March Studio in 2007 with graphic designer Anne-Laure Cavigneaux.
Some of March Studio’s most compelling works include last year’s Institute National Award-winner for Residential Architecture – Houses (New), Compound House; the Dezeen World Interior of the Year-winner the Grand Staircase at Canberra’s New Acton Hotel Hotel; and more than a dozen interiors worldwide for skincare brand Aesop.
The jury said Mr Eggleston was a deserving winner from a field of exceptional contenders.
‘With relentless consistency, March Studio demonstrates design excellence in everything they do,’ they said.
‘They inspire our industry by continuing to innovate with material explorations and experimental methods – all with an entrepreneurial spirit.’
Jury members for the national prize were Professor Lochhead FRAIA, Institute EmAGN President Thom McKenzie, Past National Emerging Architect prize-winner Monique Woodward RAIA, and Architectural Window Systems marketing, partnerships and events coordinator Lucy Kendall.
As the prize-winner, Mr Eggleston will receive a cash prize and a national tour.
