The Northern Territory (NT) Chapter of the Australian Institute of Architects has launched ‘Designing for the future of the Territory,’ a pre-election campaign to highlight priorities urging politicians to consider the built environment in the upcoming election.
“The Northern Territory is a unique and wonderful environment to live, raise a family, and is unsurprisingly an amazing destination for Australian and international travellers” says acting NT President Steven Huntingford LFRAIA, representing the Territory’s architects. “However, we are faced with complex challenges of adapting to climate change, the provision of safe and long-lasting buildings, housing for all Territorians, and building local capacity for the economy.”
The 2024 Northern Territory Election priorities emphasise how architecture can drive a strong and sustainable future for the Territory. These priorities focus on four key areas:
- Safe and long-lasting buildings in the Territory: constructing safe and long-lasting buildings that can withstand the Territory’s climate
- Building local capacity for design and construction: to create local jobs
- Delivering value: ensuring building projects deliver the most value for every dollar spent
- Good housing for all Territorians: to address prevalent housing issues.
By investing in smart design, the NT Chapter believes the Territory can become more liveable, climate-friendly, and economically prosperous. Huntingford adds, “better long-term support for the Territorian built environment industry will also decrease our reliance on importing services and expertise from interstate and creating a much stronger economy and community”.
