North Queensland
Activate! Queensland 2019–29 is the Queensland Government’s 10-year strategy, outlining the new collaborative direction for physical activity in Queensland. This initiative included the transformation of the former Townsville Sports Reserve into a vibrant precinct including;
—Three indoor multi-purpose courts
—Indoor rock-climbing wall
—Accessible change rooms and amenities
—Sports equipment storage
—Gym
—Administration
Through our findings from our initial site analysis, detailed assessment of options and engaging stakeholder and consultation process we delivered a responsive site master plan, staging and architectural design that underpins the design project response. Critical to the success of this project was the human centred design strategy.
The design supports the Activate Qld Strategy by creating an open and welcoming place, with connection to the surrounding environment; and increasing local and broader community awareness of the Precinct.
The design of the Townsville Sports Precinct Leisure Centre has created a hub for people wanting to be active using the indoor spaces. The courts are booked 7 days a week with various clubs, individuals, schools and social groups. The gym runs fitness classes and has been used by many high performance athletes and teams over the last 12 months. The new facility has enabled the Department of Tourism, Innovation and Sport to contribute to the Activate Queensland Strategy 2019-2029 by increasing participation numbers in Sport in Townsville.
