Billbergia Group engaged PTW Architects to design a mix of social and private homes on land owned by NSW Land and Housing Corporation. Located within 300m of West Ryde station and backing onto the railway line, the project comprises at total of150 apartments, of which 30 are for social housing, distributed across three blocks ranging in height from six to eleven storeys.
Each building incorporates a six-storey masonry base, a compositional device that visually anchors the project to the street. Along the railway, the composition is more dramatic and is vertically split by brick and taller metal clad curved elements. To the taller curved forms, pronounced overclad floor slabs reference the adjacent railway tracks.
The success of this project is derived from the incorporation of materials that are locally manufactured, and the provision of a range of apartment types in a development that is distinctly contextual.
