Victoria
Sandringham Primary School is one of the oldest schools in Victoria, first opening in 1855. The school was ravaged by a fire in January 2020, destroying around half of the school’s buildings and forcing it to relocate to a temporary school site. The fire destroyed several classrooms and the library among other facilities. The students, staff and school community were deeply affected by the loss caused by the fire. The project was titled “rebuild” which became a point of focus for all involved in the project.
The project was conceptualised as a village of one and two storey building forms connected to the landscape. The new facility incorporates a library, seven connected learning bases with dedicated practical areas, sensory rooms and outdoor teaching spaces. A number of spaces have been incorporated into remnant fire damaged components of the original school buildings. The rebuild has exceeded the school’s expectations
“From our very first meeting and throughout the entire project, the team at Peter Elliott Architects took time to listen, engage and fully appreciate what was important to our school, and together we were able to create a narrative for our rebuild that honoured the history of our original building as well as create modern learning spaces for generations to come. The result has exceeded our expectations and our students, teachers and families are extremely proud of the rebuilt Sandringham Primary School. We highly recommend Peter Elliott Architects”
