Parliament House was built as Australia’s newest Parliament House in 1994. First commission in the late 1980’s by the then Territory Legislative Council.
On 28 April 1987 the Sessional Committee known as the New Parliament House Committee was appointed to oversee the project. The Hon F A Finch was appointed to this committee and was a long term Territory parliamentarian. Fred Finch passed away in 2018. The project was announced by the Hon. Marshall Perron MLA on 14 July 1988 and that he was intention to proceed with the with the state square project and that the project would include construction of a new Parliament House. The Landscaping of state square at the time was valued at $170 million with construction of Parliament House being $46 million (1988 dollars).
The Australian Institute of Architects acknowledges First Nations peoples as the Traditional Custodians of the lands, waters, and skies of the continent now called Australia.
We express our gratitude to their Elders and Knowledge Holders whose wisdom, actions and knowledge have kept culture alive.
We recognise First Nations peoples as the first architects and builders. We appreciate their continuing work on Country from pre-invasion times to contemporary First Nations architects, and respect their rights to continue to care for Country.
