North Queensland
North Shore State School, Burdell is a single P-6 campus with Learning Precincts supported by support and service facilities (Administration, Information Services, and Student facilities).
The school is planned as a hierarchy of spaces, transitioning from public to private. The creation of the ‘great learning court” – a generous single landscape space with a series of intimate play and learning areas enables flexibility between the junior and senior school.
Buildings were oriented to optimize environmental advantages and to cater for Townsville’s dry tropics region, encouraging north-easterly afternoon sea breezes through the site, reducing heat gains and losses though passive design principles whilst maximizing solar loads and incorporating water saving, harvesting and recycling systems.
North Shore State School is to be a model school, offering; superior community engagement, a high level of inclusiveness and alternative models of learning.
Conrad Gargett has definitely broken the mould of our standard General Learning Area layout, an open but securable environment; the central green area is very inviting. The North Shore State School community has benefited from the amazing design and layout provided to us that directly reflects the needs of Education in North Qld. The village design concept allows for the integration of classes in the same year level in a safe and inviting learning environment. North Shore State School is privileged to be the recipient of this unique, creative and innovative design.
