Victoria
The new Function and Media Centre at Melbourne Park, CENTREPIECE, carefully balances a complex functional brief with a desire to bring a civic presence to the precinct. As a counterpoint to the dominant language of sports architecture, the building is anchored in the landscape, providing a backdrop to, and framing the adjoining public realm spaces of Garden Square, and the Central and Upper Terraces. The building is conceived as a ‘solid’ object, differentiating itself from its neighbouring buildings via materiality, architectural language, and unique program. While it’s largely homogenous materially – polished concrete, steel plate and glass – each elevation is a carefully designed threshold with these public spaces.
NH worked closely with Development Victoria, Melbourne & Olympic Parks, Tennis Australia and Sport and Recreation Victoria to deliver considered design solutions for flexibility and longevity. The venue features spaces that respond to the continuously changing requirements, both year-round and during the Australian Open.

The Australian Institute of Architects acknowledges First Nations peoples as the Traditional Custodians of the lands, waters, and skies of the continent now called Australia.
We express our gratitude to their Elders and Knowledge Holders whose wisdom, actions and knowledge have kept culture alive.
We recognise First Nations peoples as the first architects and builders. We appreciate their continuing work on Country from pre-invasion times to contemporary First Nations architects, and respect their rights to continue to care for Country.
