Western Australia
The concept focuses on place, both built and natural, and the desire to be sympathetic to the streetscape and its scale. A very conscious decision was made of avoiding ‘upside down’ living in favour of seamless connection to the ground plane. The plan is divided into public and private with the front living area a place for family and friends to interact with each other and the environment outside. The rear provides a more closeted and protected experience. The elongated plan provides north light to all living areas and bedrooms.
Use of highly insulated wall and roof panels, strategic planning of spaces which can be used at various times of the year and soft landscaping including bodies of water assist to reduce heat island effect around the home and help regulate internal comfort. Photovoltaic panels (and provision for future battery storage) assists in reducing the homes reliance on the grid.
The front section with the cathedral height ceilings has been beautifully designed to accommodate our passions of cooking and entertaining. There is strong connection to the streetscape and when exiting and entering the home it feels as if you are walking straight to or from the parkland. Our teenagers have breakout areas to enjoy with their friends and our own retreat is so comfortable and enjoyable. Lighting and materiality was considered as a whole and promotes relaxation and feeling of sanctuary. It brings a smile to our faces as our family discover, absorb, and enjoy the spaces.
