The Coopers Stadium Upgrade has been designed with two objectives in mind: to enhance the matchday experience for attendees of world-class events. To preserve Woods Bagot’s design legacy at Hindmarsh Stadium with a proposal that uses adaptive reuse techniques to seamlessly blend the new and old elements. Upon arrival from the city end, visitors are greeted by the Eastern Stand corporate facility, which provides a welcoming entrance with its monolithic architectural expression and LED lit under croft steering you towards the pitch. Once pitch side, the Eastern Stand proposal bookends the existing Western grandstand, creating an elevated and intimate stadium atmosphere. The function room boasts expansive structural spans and breathtaking views of the pitch and city.
The architect was given the challenging brief of having to fully-integrate and upgrade an old, dilapidated stadium seamlessly with significant new building elements to create a world class football stadium. The success or failure of the project was dependant on the ability of the architect to achieve this outcome. They did a fantastic job of incorporating the key historical architectural features of the original stadium, while also introducing the latest and greatest technology. This was done in a way that was respectful of the rich football history of the stadium and a unwavering focus on delivering a market-leading end-user experience.
