New South Wales
This grand old Arts and Crafts dame in Sydney’s Eastern Suburbs channels the spirit of the original architect in its restoration and extension. Opening up to sun, garden and view, the house now addresses its beautiful garden, supports energetic and playful family life as well as contemporary work from home.
Driving our design process was the question: If the original architect had access to our building materials and tools, how would they approach the brief? We have used the ethos of the arts and crafts to be inventive with detail, to embrace narrative within the design and to lean into eccentricity.
Commendation for Residential – Houses (Alterations and Additions)
This is an exemplary extension to an existing house that is respectful whilst not deferential. The project celebrates the spirit and intent of the grand Arts and Crafts house, adding an imaginative flare to the original design. New additions, such as a barrel-vaulted verandah tucked beneath the deep sloping eaves, gives the house a distinct personality and a touch of exuberance.
In a subtle act of translation, beautiful joinery expresses the Arts and Crafts aesthetic afresh, giving the sizeable interiors coherence and offering moments of intimacy. The wallpaper lined dressing room is an unexpected delight, honouring daily rituals.
We feel like we live in a work of art, with each room having its own beautiful and unique feel. Everywhere we look there are fun details that make us smile. We love the way light shines through the skylight chimney and stair details to create subtle changing patterns.
Tribe’s design created more functional living spaces (for work, play and rest) that suit our family and lifestyle, brought in more light and connected the house to the garden. Our house stays cool in summer and is warm in winter without air-conditioning. Most importantly, our house is extremely liveable.
