Cox Architecture’s new Sydney studio sits within 5 floors of the Heritage listed Metcalfe Bond Stores in Tallawoladah. Our objective was to do more with less, balancing the poetic with pragmatic. Sustainability is to the fore with a mixed mode approach to ventilation that combines nature with technology and with the majority of our furniture specified as either vintage or reuse pieces. Restrained interventions allow the heritage to be the hero and minimise the projects embodied energy.
Experimental nimble workspace allows teams to reconfigure hackable areas providing staff with the autonomy to control their space and future proofing the studio as the ‘workplace’ evolves and continues to redefine itself.
Last (but certainly not least!) views across the Sydney’s sparkling Harbour towards Jorn Utzon’s Opera House provide equal parts inspiration and distraction for staff and visitors alike.
As I broke through the wall of the buildings, the impact of the light across the water was uplifting. To the right the most beautiful building in the world. And up to the left the Harbour Bridge. Nestled in its foundations another adaptive reuse structure. Our new home. Washed with time and with expressions of structure. The interior, light and open with an airiness that creates an invitation to participate. At once connected to both itself and its context. It speaks to the values of Cox and those of the city. Anything is possible with our people in this place.
