Introducing the 2023 SA Architecture Awards Juries

The Australia Institute of Architects SA Chapter is pleased to introduce the juries for the primary categories in the 2023 SA Architecture Awards. Peer review is an important element in the awards program, recognising excellence and innovation in design. You can learn more about each juror by clicking on their name to read their bio.

Architects will present their projects to the juries on Saturday 18 March. Everyone is invited to come along and learn about the projects entered in this year’s awards. The schedule can be found here.

Anne Taylor of Taylor Buchtmann Architecture has worked in architecture for almost 30 years, with over 20 of those as a registered architect.  With a background in public buildings and adaptive reuse, she has most recently been engaged with housing projects of varying scales. 

With substantial experience in small and medium-scale practice, both in Adelaide and Sydney, TBArch was founded as a deliberately small practice, with a primary aim of using their agility to design highly responsive projects thoughtfully.

Anne is involved more widely in the profession, including teaching and undertaking an ongoing photographic project documenting lesser-loved, vulnerable and fast-disappearing, buildings in the Adelaide suburbs.  These were exhibited publicly in 2022.

Erin Crowden is a registered architect with over 13 years’ experience, over which she has been deeply and consistently involved in the wider architectural community. Serving as EmAGN SA co-chair, SA Chapter Councillor, EmAGN National President and Institute National Councillor for 2020-2021, Erin is an advocate for the emerging demographic at the state and national levels.

Erin has also participated in numerous State and National Awards juries, the Dulux Study Tour and Jack Hobbs McConnell Fellowship judging panels and was instrumental in instigating the national EmAGN Living Village competition in 2020 and the EmAGN Project Award in 2021. Erin was awarded the SA Chapter Emerging Architect Prize in 2020.

Beyond practice and her community roles, she also contributes as a writer to the Local Project and is an APE Examiner for the Architectural Practice Board of SA.

City of Adelaide Prize Jury

Sue is a founding partner and Director of Phillips/Pilkington Architects, whose projects have been awarded in a huge range of categories, including Urban Design, Heritage, Interior, Educational and Sustainable Architecture, and the City of Adelaide Prize. She is also an experienced juror, having chaired juries across four categories.

Henry is a current Councillor for the City of Adelaide and runs a legal practice, specialising in tax law. He graduated in 2016 with a double degree in Law and Arts. Outside of academics, he served the public in the Royal Australian Airforce, as a CFS volunteer and previously as a Councillor of the City of Burnside.

Nathan is a design writer who is passionate about elevating the impact design-led thinking can have for people both within and outside of the design profession. An award-winning writer and editor, Nathan has been published in titles including Artichoke, The Adelaide Review, FORM Journal, LUXURY, Educate and Marmalade, and is a regular guest judge for design industry awards programs.

David is a highly skilled senior planning practitioner. He is renowned for his pragmatic, determined and collaborative approach across a wide range of strategic and statutory projects. In addition to working in SA, David has provided planning advice for projects in Victoria and the NT and overseen land development projects in the ACT.

Janelle is a senior Landscape Architect and Urban Designer with experience in design, strategy and delivery across multi-disciplinary, community, infrastructure and public projects. She is also a PhD candidate for a doctorate in Landscape Architecture focusing on Public Realm and Vice President of the Australian Institute of Landscape Architecture (AILA) SA Chapter.

Sarah is an experienced leader in arts management and an enabler of extraordinary creative cultural experiences. She has over 25 years working in the SA arts and culture sector, working across state and local government and at a range of cultural institutions, including the City of Adelaide, Arts South Australia, State Library of South Australia and Artlab Australia.

Commercial Architecture and Public Architecture Jury

With over 35 years’ experience, Brendan has a proven track record as a skilled and proficient architect. His creative and concerted approach has ensured the successful design and delivery of numerous high-profile and award-winning architectural projects across Australia and internationally. This is his second year as a juror for the Commercial and Public Architecture categories.

An Associate Architect at Grieve Gillett Andersen, Shae believes architecture should meet functional requirements but also enhance the quality of life of the end-users and the community as a whole.  Shae’s expertise spans a wide range of sectors, budgets and locations throughout Australia, specializing in remote locations, civic and community facilities, commercial developments, health facilities, education, and private residences.

Leah is a registered architect with 15+ years experience within medium-sized Adelaide firms, working for government and private sectors. She has previously represented the SA architecutre community as an SA Chapter Council member, FAD Executive Team Leader and Co-Creative Director, and with the Construction Culture Initiative. She currently works as a Senior Architect at Detail Studio.

Amanda is a project architect with over 20 years of experience delivering projects in the commercial, education and retail sectors, including multiple projects involving some of the State’s most significant heritage buildings. She takes a vigorous interest in gender equity and is passionate about creating opportunities for women in the architecture and construction fields.

Marina joins the jury on behalf of Fielders, who are generously supporting the Commercial Architecture category. As well as working as a Business Development Manager, she received her PhD in research on Smart Building Façades, and is a Steering Committee member with the Adelaide Sustainable Building Network (ASBN).

Educational Architecture

Stephen Ward (FRAIA) is a Senior Lecturer and the Dean of Programs at UniSA Creative. He has extensive experience in architectural education and practice in the public and commercial sectors. He has been recognised through professional and academic leadership roles and architecture awards at the state and national levels. He is an experienced juror, most recently serving as jury chair for the Interior Architecture category in 2022.

Heather Wasley is an Associate and Senior Architect at GGA. Adept at leading projects from procurement to delivery, she has a well-rounded, diverse portfolio and skill set in sectors including residential, multi-residential, education, commercial and cultural. Heather is a member of the Learning Environment Australia and is a current Committee member of the Property Council of Australia: Residential & Infill Committee.

Matt has over 10 years of experience in projects across the education, commercial, health care, public and heritage sectors. Matt has successfully delivered numerous large scale Education projects for both public and private clients. This is his second year on the Educational Architecture jury.

Jon has over 20 years of experience in residential, public and educational projects, including both government and private schools and now runs his own practice, Jon Lowe Architect. He has been a juror in the SA Architecture Awards a number of times since 2016 and enjoys hearing the design philosophy behind the projects directly from the architects and getting up close and personal with the built form.

Interior Architecture

Dr Katica Pedisic is an Architect and Lecturer at UniSA, teaching architectural design, construction, communication and professional practice. She has over 13 years in practice working on residential and small-scale cultural projects, with work published internationally, and receiving numerous Institute awards for design excellence.

Sean graduated with first-class honours from the University of South Australia in 2006 and worked at a number of local practices before co-founding Black Rabbit Architecture + Interiors in 2013. Black Rabbit has won a number of awards in the Residential and Interior categories. Sean is a well-seasoned juror and was Awards Director in 2016.

Mark is a Director at Walter Brooke with diverse project experience in sectors ranging from commercial, residential, and educational to hospitality and leisure. With a focus on interior architecture and dual qualifications as an architect and landscape architect, he recognizes the key interrelation of internal and external spaces.

Sara is the founder and creative director of Das Studio. Combining degrees in both Architecture and Product Design she has worked as an Interior Designer across large and small practice for the past 13 years, delivering award-winning projects within the residential, hospitality and accommodation sectors.

Residential Architecture (Houses – Alterations + Additions) and Small Project Architecture Jury

Tain Patterson is a senior architect at Troppo Architects with over 20 years of experience working on various public, commercial and residential projects, including several award-winning houses, alterations and additions. He has previously been on the Sustainable Architecture and New Houses juries, and was the Awards Director in 2022.

Sally is founder and director of Archaea, a small-scale design studio that places emphasises on the client and architect relationship. She has received numerous Australian Institute of Architects awards for residential and commercial architecture, and has been involved as a juror for the SA Awards since 2013.

Vi been a key member of the design team at Cox Architecture Adelaide studio for the past 8 years. She has worked on built projects spanning Commercial, Education, Sports and Living with a key focus on driving high-quality design outcomes for clients and the public. She is currently working on the 60 King William Charter Hall Tower in the CBD and a residential project in North Adelaide, both with heritage sensitivity. She is thrilled to be a juror in this year’s SA Architecture Awards and looks forward to acknowledging and celebrating exemplary local projects.

Maegan is a registered architect with 6 years of experience, working primarily in the residential space for award-winning practice Black Rabbit. She is experienced in judging in multiple awards platforms in South Australia.

Residential Architecture (Houses – New) and Residential Architecture (Multiple Housing) Jury

Almost obsessive about design and the pivotal role it can play in improving people’s lives, Andrew uses his craft to create spaces that are insightful and intentional, constantly underpinned by his reductive approach to materiality and the beauty found in simplicity.

He has over 19 years of experience working on projects across most sectors, with his recent multi-res projects achieving architectural commendations.

David is a Director at Williams Burton Leopardi, a practice which has received no less than 20 awards and commendations over the past decade for its work in the residential and interior space. He has previously been a juror in the SA Architecture Awards and the DIA SA/NT Awards.

Victoria has seven years of experience working on award-winning Education and Residential projects, curating spaces for learning, connection, and life. She is involved in the broader creative industries, and has been an active member of the Institute, sitting on the EmAGN SA Committee, and Co-Chairing the group in 2020 and 2021.

In 2012 Chris founded RADS with the intention to make architecture as approachable as possible. With experience in the hospitality industry and a passion for residential architecture the practice has naturally attracted lifestyle projects. His residential work received two architectural commendations in the 2022 Awards.

Sarah joins the jury on behalf of Brickworks Building Products, who are generously supporting the Residential Architecture (Houses – New) category. Sarah is an Interior Designer with over 25 years experience both nationally and overseas in her own practice and as an Industry Supplier.

Sustainable Architecture Jury

Yaara Plaves is head of the National Sustainability Forum (NSF) at Hames Sharley. She has contributed to leadership in sustainability in education, residential, commercial and government projects on a national level, including Scotch College Wellbeing and Sport Centre, the first LBC project in SA. With a deep understanding of sustainability and regenerative design, Yaara is involved in several committees and professional organisations in the sustainability field.

Ryan Horsnell is a senior architect at Troppo Architects with over 15 years’ experience working on significant and award winning residential, multi-residental, commercial and tourism projects in Adelaide and Darwin and throughout regional SA, VIC and NT. He has previously been on the Sustainable Architecture, heritage, Small Projects and Public Awards juries

Melanie is a Senior Architect at ODASA with over 30 years of experience in practice. She has previously been a juror in the Houses – New category, and is a current member of the SA Regen Committee.

Urban Design and Heritage Jury

David is a Director at BB Architects with over two decades of experience in heritage and conservation projects. He has received a handful of awards across the Heritage, Alterations + Additions and Sustainable Architecture categories, has been a juror a half-dozen times in the past decade, and was Awards Director in 2014.

Tom has over 20 years of experience in architecture and design, leading a wide variety of award-winning projects. He has previously been on the City of Adelaide Prize and Interior Architecture juries.

Ed recently established Forum after 15 years of experience in Melbourne and Adelaide with a leading international design practice. He holds qualifications in both architecture and landscape architecture.

Ed has delivered many city-changing, award-winning architecture, urban design and heritage projects in Adelaide and Melbourne- and was a jury member for the Urban Design category in the 2014 Victorian Architecture Awards.  

Emma is a strategic thinker and multi-disciplinary designer with over 15 years working across architecture, urban design, and landscape architecture (in practice and education). In recent years Emma has been involved in numerous urban transformational projects that promote community activity and sustainability, setting new benchmarks and vision for urban centres.
