Sunshine Coast
Sunshine Coast City Hall establishes a new benchmark for building design regionally through transparency of built form, façade activation and environmental sustainability. It is the physical embodiment of the vision, values and goals of the region.
The Sunshine Coast City Council challenges the notion of the traditional ‘Town Hall’ concept, providing a high level of physical access and engagement to the residents and visitors of the region through the creation of the ‘City Hall of Tomorrow’.
The projects vision sought to address key characteristics including strong governance, healthy work environment, economic opportunities, sub-tropical design, community connectivity, iconic form, sustainability and value for money. The development consolidates council’s operations into one central building, a catalyst for workplace efficiency.
Setting the standard for workplace design in Maroochydore, and creating a landmark building that represents the Council’s commitment to design excellence, innovation and sustainability.
Inspired by indigenous philosophies of connection to country, the design seeks to heal country with an experiential journey of spaces inspired by its surrounding landscape. Referencing the passage of waterways and erosion of land masses, organic interior forms shape spaces and ground the design in the past whilst speaking to the evolving future.
Workplace floors explore a darker material palette; intimate meeting spaces in the “mountain core” and focus zones overlooking the hinterland prompt quiet reflection; the collaboration zone facing the coast offers a brighter, open coastal feel in contrast. Workplace zones connect to their geographical inspiration prompting required behaviours.
Cottee Parker’s iconic design for City Hall in Maroochydore’s new City Centre stands out while blending seamlessly into the built and natural surroundings. The design considers the building’s civic significance and provides a healthy, smart, and creative space for Council’s staff serving the community. The workspace, purposefully designed to build engagement, productivity, and innovation, has seen staff prefer to return to the office to connect and work more effectively and efficiently. The community has responded positively to the landmark Greenstar building which sets a new benchmark for sustainable internal and external design in the City Centre and wider region.
