In life, we have many responsibilities, but we can only ever do so much by ourselves. The way in which we have evolved as human beings’ hinges on our connections, to family, to friends, to our community. The stronger these connections, the more collaboration and sharing, the more fruitful our society is. SONA brings people together and in doing so makes our architectural community stronger and allows the architectural profession to more holistically contribute to the betterment of humanity.
The benefits of SONA are manifold but for me, the greatest value is in the conversations I have had and the friendships I have made. I have met many passionate students and professionals who inspire me and give me hope for the future of the profession. SONA’s culture of knowledge sharing, and collaboration means that individuals are given the opportunity to reach their full potential and in doing so we as a community have more agency.
Students are the future of the architectural profession. We have the responsibility to do more.
Thomas Huntingford

Through my engagement with SONA so far, as Melbourne Uni Representative and Vice President for Membership and Engagement, I have enjoyed the opportunity to think broadly about where SONA and the institute can offer meaningful value to students. By continuing into the president elect role I would like to think that I could help shape SONAs offering further by building upon SONAs strengths, namely running events and bringing students together, by ensuring that in emerging from COVID restrictions we recapture any aspects that may have been hindered by the last two years. But also, by thinking clearly about areas that could stand to improve and suggesting processes by which SONA could seek to address these areas continually over the long term.
In the wake of the isolation inflicted by the coronavirus I believe one of the key issues that I would continue seeking to address through SONA is student engagement and interaction. I believe SONA is uniquely positioned as a national organisation of built environment students to foster cross institutional collaboration that allows for the sharing of ideas and formation of relationships that in turn are the catalysts for initiatives and groups that may go on to impact the architectural profession. This contribution to a ‘culture’ of like-minded individuals is key to SONA and the Institute's intent to advance architecture. This year we have begun to implement various methods for engaging with members and SONA Reps through the Community platform and rethinking internal processes. By continuing on with SONA I would hope to continue developing how the organisation strengthens connections between all of the students involved.
Throughout my studies I have tried to be as actively engaged in the study of the built environment as I can be and have always sought out extra-curricular talks, student initiatives and other opportunities. I also have experience representing students and communicating the student perspective through my involvement with the MSD Student Forum, which works to communicate student viewpoints to the faculty at the MSD and having sat on the Victorian Chapter Council, Editorial and Education Committees. Finally I have a strong belief in the ‘do the thing,’ or ‘start by starting,’ approach whereby if an opportunity arises to make change or a good idea crops up I aspire to simply do it rather than wait around for someone else or ask for permission. In this way perhaps I could be seen to ‘lead by example.’

Within the two years of being a SONA representative, I have been inspired by the supportive and driven community of the Australian Institute of Architects. SONA and the AIA has helped me realised who I want to be as an architect. I am interested in taking this role because I would like all architecture students to be part of this experience.
SONA events should bridge the gap between leaving university and finding work, releasing certain anxieties students have around what they may think the profession is and how they see themselves in it. SONA events and competitions can be successful in providing students with experiences that help them find their place in the architecture community and develop their own passions and drive within the profession.
Mental Health and Wellbeing - SONA is in the process of a great initiative around assessing the effects of student health and wellbeing and how it affects their ability to study architecture. I believe that as a profession and university program, we have a problem with overworking ourselves and burning out. That is something I wish to help address as part of this role. (e.g. R U OK? Day)
Collaborative Practice - Architects do not work as sole consultants nor isolated from the rest of the world, we are quite the opposite. I wish to advocate for collaborative studio practices within universities that replicate the profession.
Sustainable and Regenerative Design - I value and hope to promote and undertake design that is considerate and gives back to the environment and the people that dwell within it.
Intercultural Placemaking - As our cities become more diverse, our architecture also should.
As I have been a SONA Representative for 2 years, I believe that the skills and knowledge I have accumulated over this time will support my success in this role. I believe that I now have a better understanding of what students expect and wish to see from SONA.
An example of a successful series of events would be our Beyond Uni Series:
Part 1 - Q&A Panel about portfolios and interviews.
Part 2 - Two-day office crawl on collaborative practice. Visited practices, consultants, collaborators, and suppliers.
Part 3 - Two tours of award-winning SA Architecture focusing on heritage revival and adaptive reuse.
Part 4 - Office Crawl visiting a diverse range of architectural practices in SA. (Nov 23)
I hope to bring honesty, drive and a passion for architecture to this role as well as being a collaborative and considerate team member and leader.

Ever since my undergraduate degree, I have always been a strong believer in what SONA does. I am applying for this role as someone that has previously worked with SONA on several initiatives before taking on the role as a university representative, all of which have been part of an active pursuit towards making a positive change within the field of Architecture. Now that I am pursuing a Postgraduate degree and have developed a unique understanding of the student experience, I believe that progressing within the SONA executive team, applying my knowledge in these areas and aligning myself with an organisation that shares the same values, is a position where I will truly be able to assist SONA and the institute in providing the next generation of professionals with true value during (and beyond) their education.
Student advocacy has always been what matters the most to me. As a student myself, I've always been surrounded by brilliant minds and people. Unfortunately, due to the immense pressures and ongoing issues that come with an education in Architecture, there is way too much evidence that indicates its negative impact on the well-being of these students. However, things are changing for the better and the resources SONA offers its members will play a major role in creating positive change where needed.
Within this role, I hope to use the platform to further improve the way SONA engages with its members, in order for everyone to utilise the resources available, build stronger relationships within the community, understand their perspectives better, approach the “decision makers” and advocate for change.
Community has been the key driver behind the initiatives I have worked on; The people, community and potential for them to make the world a better place, motivates me to take on these roles.
In the big picture, I hope to utilise my knowledge and experience with both film-making and social media to truly provide students with a good understanding of what SONA is all about, whilst actively communicating with members across the country. Through Social Media alone, there are many opportunities to break-down existing barriers, allowing everyone to stay engaged in both the short term and long term.
Additionally, it would be fantastic to continue having one-on-one conversations with peers, members and SONA representatives regarding their thoughts and opinions. I believe that community engagement is what lays the foundations for SONA to work off and further growth of the community will only lead to more positive changes.

I have had direct experience with building relationships with fellow students, staff, and industry professionals such as being mentored by Bill Krotiris (Institute's Victorian Chapter President) which have all allowed me to gain insight into the differing perspectives of my current community. This experience also ensures I can work to continue to improve student experiences and development opportunities.

SONA presents an opportunity for all students to partake in competitions and workshops extending their in-studio time, allowing for true creative expression that is needed in the field of Architecture.
I partook in the SONA SuperStudio competition this year, and I believe that experience, and meeting other students from other institutions has strengthened my interests in Architecture.

I have learned to encourage the involvement of members without patronizing them but by inspiring them, listening to their needs, having the courage to voice current issues, and resolving them without judgment.
Through my involvement in many organizations, including the Indonesian Film Festival and the Indonesian Student Association around the Globe, I have learned to work efficiently through (remote) collaboration. Working remotely can be a challenge, but with open communication, empathy, and continuous efforts from all parties, we successfully conducted our events (both offline and online events). I bring these collaborative and fruitful experiences to SONA.

Master of Architecture , Monash University
I believe that my passion, breadth of experience in student-led initiatives, and ambition to deliver tangible change for the student body makes me a key candidate for the SONA Representative role. My involvement in the Caulfield Arts Society (CAS) and the Monash Art, Design and Architecture Student Society (MADASS) has enabled me to help students develop both academically, professionally, and socially and has equipped me with strong teamwork and stakeholder engagement skills. These experiences would help me connect with the student body at Monash through my strong relationship with faculties and clubs, contribute to creating engaging local events, and represent the Monash student body on the committee. Additionally, I believe that I can effectively collaborate with a diverse executive team and their respective portfolios to deliver initiatives that improve the student experience and professional development. Ultimately, I want to translate these core professional competencies, within student initiatives, to the services that SONA delivers for students and architecture more broadly.

As a young student within the architecture industry, I believe I can provide the voice QUT students need. Through collaboration and innovative thinking, I will be able to actively speak out and create change within the industry whether it is big or small. Following my passion of architecture, I will dedicate my time and apply myself into enhancing the SONA community, through educating, supporting, and encouraging students and fostering their growth.
I recently secured a job in an architecture firm, and I understand how important connections within this industry are. I believe that all students should be starting to network within the industry as early as possible. Providing an opportunity to organise networking events that are successful, as well as an enjoyable experience for all is something that I strive for.
Creating more connections and positive experiences can lead to better architects in the future.

SONA successfully provides opportunities for students to become involved in competitions and immersive experiences, I believe that I could assist in strengthening student involvement towards these opportunities through both ideas surrounding the delivery of these programs and practical methods such as strong proficiency in working within social media platforms.
I would love to see SONA also offer more student opportunities to work with the local community in both charity and initiative programs and hope to be able to be on board and realise such opportunities.
I am very passionate about the wellbeing of the student body and love the community that SONA provides.

I believe I will continue to work with students and help them in their academic endeavours. I have learnt a lot throughout past experiences whilst representing SONA and the team, and hope to apply that in the future years to come. I am willing to spend time with students as well as share insights on the opportunities SONA has to offer. I am also a keen leader, that has the ability to drive support and showcase events to a larger crowd. My background in architecture speaks highly for itself and I am confident that students will find the best of me and use it to their abilities. My involvement as a representative for 2022 with SONA will ensure that all required tasks have been fulfilled to a higher standard and the needs of the larger cohort are met.

I have been a SONA member for the past two years and joined in during many of the events organised. Aside from that I am also a member of the UWA ALVA Student Society amongst other clubs on campus.
I've been volunteering at UWA UniMentor for the past four semesters which has included meeting new students, promoting the university, and aiding with events. I am also a cultural committee member at the Bangladesh Australia Association of Western Australia where I have organised and hosted many small and large scale events. I have also been working as an Admissions Officer at UWA for the past year which has helped me learn and grow in a professional environment. These volunteering and work opportunities have allowed for me to grow my skills of organisation, communication, and project planning while also giving back to communities that mean a lot to me, and I would love to do the same for SONA if given the opportunity.

I believe I have the drive and organisational skills to allow existing SONA events to happen with great success. I have had plenty experience liaising with people to organise events in my previous roles as ALVA Sponsorship Officer at UWA where I hosted the first Networking Evening and as Fundraising Officer at Teach Learn Grow (TLG) for various events notably the 10 year gala online auction.
I have a down-to-earth personality which enables me to build great relationships with anyone I work with and will meet as a SONA rep, as well as being someone who other students feel comfortable approaching if they have any queries.

In 2019, I was on the Benevolent Society's ‘Grandparent’s Connections Program’ steering committee, drafting the first carers mentoring service in Australia. This prestigious opportunity contributes to my aspirations in exploring architecture as an instrumental creative solution within the disability sector to combat current social disparities.

In a world that is riddled with current social, political, economic and environmental dilemmas, I think it is increasingly important that leaders of our industry are able to foster a sense of connection that goes beyond the computer screen. The pandemic saw a lot of students lose opportunities to engage with other designers, academics and students and consequentially has ultimately left many feeling isolated. I think that the difference that I could make is to re-connect students to this incredibly exciting career and the ways our industry can address the current issues of the world. It is important to me to make architecture feel more accessible to students and to allow the discussions between architects, teachers and students to be more fluid.

Being an online student, based in Hobart Tasmania I have found that SONA membership provides equity of access to higher design and architecture education that increases diversity. This includes remote location participation, students meeting from a wide range of places, cultural backgrounds and ages, and career development for those with care and financial responsibilities while studying. SONA members professional development and wellbeing can benefit from architecture profession connections and knowledge locally, regionally, nationally and internationally, online or through welcoming experiences with other members face to face at local chapter events.

I believe the NT lacks regular SONA meetings, there isn't sufficient interaction between students and Universities. I firmly believe that creating a meeting roster to support SONA at architectural practices or classrooms would be beneficial to exchange experiences, views, and skills. Once we establish a collaborating space I think students can ask for help, self-develop, and learn from each other.
