CATHERINE LASSEN
With an inspiring international career as a practitioner and academic, Catherine consistently and passionately promotes and mentors those around her, creates agency in learning, and pursues research which celebrates the enduring value of Australian architecture.
Drawing upon her experience in private practice, Catherine’s unique approach to teaching encompasses social, cultural, technical, and historical narratives of architecture, emphasising the advancement of a profession that is innovative, critically engaged, and socially responsible.
Pursuing original research, Catherine has highlighted the significant local contribution of women, including Eva Buhrich and Marion Mahony Griffin, to the understanding of modern Australian architecture and its influence upon contemporary practice. The exploration of society, culture, and technical innovation in her research is reflected in her pedagogical approach, making architecture discernible by learning through precedent and promoting inclusive environments for students to develop.
Catherine is Senior Lecturer at the University of Sydney, and Coordinator of the Rothwell Chair in Architectural Design Leadership Program. She is a valued mentor and role model. Her selfless generosity, particularly to the women around her, is exemplary and makes her the worthy recipient of this prize.
