2017 Darling Downs/West Moreton Regional Architecture Awards Results

The Royal Hotel Roma by dm2architecture has won the William Hodgen Award for Building of the Year in the Australian Institute of Architects’ 2017 Darling Downs/West Moreton Regional Architecture Awards.

In awarding what the jury described as the ‘modern successor to a fire ravaged 1920s hotel’ they noted that the building had ‘successfully re-interpreted the traditional outback pub vernacular through the architect’s use of well-considered and understated regional qualities.’ They commended the ‘light filled, casual atmosphere [that] permeates through this family orientated hotel, which respects its place in the community.’

Other award winners announced at the University of Southern Queensland tonight include House on Guido by Shane Denman Architects which won House of the Year and Walton Stores by Aspect Architects and Project Managers with Newlands Group which was awarded the Regional Project of the Year Award.

The jury said House on Guido’s exterior was ‘a simple strong element’ that ‘sits comfortably with the power and character of this site. The clarity in the design approach is carried through into the interior where the elegantly simple yet practical spaces add to the appreciation of the site’s beauty’.

Walton Stores was praised for its ‘creative and sensitive architectural consideration of a heritage precinct’. The jury said the project ‘makes an important contribution to the fabric of the CBD and Toowoomba in general’ proving ‘heritage and modern living can be successfully married together’.

In addition to the Building of the Year, Regional Project of the Year and House of the Year, the above projects were   awarded Regional Commendations along with  three other projects, all commended projects now progressing to the Queensland State Architecture Awards to be announced on 23 June in Brisbane.

Toowoomba City Library
James Cubitt Architects and Peddle Thorp in Association, with Elia Architecture

A prominent building out looking the Civic Square, the library is a series of well organised spaces with a high level of consideration towards meaningful client interaction. The building is inviting and user-focused internally, while externally the copper cladding serves as a gleaming beacon to the community.

Gatton Plant Industries
dm2architecture

This project converts an original UQ Gatton building into modern laboratories, learning centre and a new linking corridor. It skilfully addresses complex planning, building and technical issues in providing a cost effective facility and a new covered external courtyard adds comfort and amenity for the students.

Royal Hotel Roma
dm2architecture

The modern successor to a fire ravaged 1920’s hotel.  This building has successfully re-interpreted the traditional outback pub vernacular through the architect’s use of well-considered and understated regional qualities. A light filled, casual atmosphere permeates through this family orientated hotel, which respects its place in the community.

The Piano Mill
Conrad Gargett

The patinated copper and strong vertical form of this ‘object’ sits comfortably within the dramatic forest landscape. Is it architecture? Is it sculpture? Is it a musical instrument? It is all about enjoyment - the enjoyment of the environment, of the arts and of friends. It is a celebration.

Walton Stores
Aspect Architects and Project Managers with Newlands Group

Creative and sensitive architectural consideration of a heritage precinct comprising five buildings has achieved a vibrant public area occupied day and night. It makes an important contribution to the fabric of the CBD and Toowoomba in general. It proves heritage and modern living can be successfully married together.

House on Guido
Shane Denman Architects

The external appearance of this house as a simple strong element sits comfortably with the power and character of this site. The clarity in the design approach is carried through into the interior where the elegantly simple yet practical spaces add to the appreciation of the site’s beauty.

Clifton Medical Centre
Elia Architecture

An exemplar in the pursuit of best practice medical care, the building exhibits a well organised program with thoughtful client-staff interfacing. The centre extolls the virtues of a safe and supportive work environment and is a positive contribution to the Clifton community.

Ergon Energy Amenities Block
Elia Architecture

A robust facility that efficiently serves a high volume of staff. Stitching together a nucleus with the existing campus buildings via a courtyard, the building utilises a play of light and shade to create a sensitive transition of indoor and outdoor spaces, for both field and office staff.

BreastScreen Toowoomba
Elia Architecture

The architects have achieved in this interior fitout a well-planned and considered public facility. The clinic’s design allows a more accessible, friendlier and private environment for both the patients and staff from that of its previous hospital setting, through the sensitive use of colours, materials, and built forms.

Breeze Solarium House
Architects Black and Wilson Pty Ltd

A highly considered design has been created for a home which embraces its northerly aspect, capturing the essence of the seasons of this dramatic rural setting.  Extensively researched environmental considerations sit comfortably next to a palette of natural materials, quality finishes and subtle colours.
