RAYMOND, Antonin & Noemi
Crafting a
Modern World:
the architecture & design of Antonin & Noemi Raymond Helfrich
K. Whitaker W.
The first comprehensive book in English on Antonin and Noémi
Raymond, the duo
sometimes referred to as the duo that creatively transformed design
from 1917
to 1966, they are best remembered for a series of finely detailed
structures
built in Japan during the 1930s. The Raymond’s had prolific careers
that
included designs for housing, factories, offices, churches, and schools
as well
as furniture, fabrics, and graphic design. With a combination of their
modern
European backgrounds, and heavily influenced by the traditional
vernacular
crafts discovered during their travels through Japan, this designing
duo
collaborated with some of the twentieth century's leading designers,
such as
Frank Lloyd Wright, Isamu Noguchi, and Fernand Léger. PAP USA

REICHEN & ROBERT
Reichen
& Robert
This French practice has
developed a reputation and acclaim for a number of conversion,
refurbishment and restoration projects that blend the old with the new,
program on program, and contexts with relationships. Initially, it was
the conversion of a number of 19th century iron and glass 'sheds',
including the Grande Hall de La Villette that won their reputation.
Recent examples of work also include the development of one of the
sites for the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, and the headquarters of
Nestle France in a former chocolate factory. With projects realised in
France, Greece, USA, Qatar and Australia (masterplanning in Sydney and
the construction of an apartment building and hospital) Robert &
Reichen certainly deserve their reputation. An excellent book for those
looking for a range of projects where refurbishment and sensitive
contexts feature widely. Birkhauser, Switzerland, 2003. PB 173pp $A

One of Scandinavia’s
leading architecture practices,
Snohetta seeks to develop its architecture within a continuous state of
reinvention. The projects are examples of attitudes rather than
designs,
samples rather than products, associative rather than symbolic and are
comments
rather than statements. Conditions describes the collective
methods used
in search for solutions to complex realities. Projects such as the

the intentions of the architects whilst hinting on a commentary on a
