New South Wales architecture

Architecture in New South Wales reflects the state's climate and culture. The iconic Sydney Opera House is among the most recognisable buildings in the world.

Register of Significant Architecture in NSW

The NSW Chapter of the Australian Institute of Architects has maintained a register of significant architecture in the state since October 1949. By the early 1970s an agreement had been reached with the National Trust that the focus of listings undertaken by the NSW Chapter would be buildings post 1900. The first Interim List of 20th Century Buildings appeared in The Bulletin in 1973.

The list presented here is an abbreviated version of the register entries and listing cards held at the NSW Chapter Office.

This list should not be considered exhaustive – much work remains to be done. A special sub-committee of the NSW Chapter Heritage Committee regularly undertakes surveys and reviews nominations, as well as continually adding buildings to the register. The committee invites nominations for further entries and corrections to the listed entries.

For information contact the NSW Chapter, 02 9246 4055 or email nsw@architecture.com.au.
