About the Institute

The Australian Institute of Architects is the peak body for the architectural profession in Australia, representing 11,000 members. The Institute works to improve our built environment by promoting quality, responsible, sustainable design.

Our 2018 - 2020 Strategy

The Institute's new three-year strategy, developed in close consultation with members,
sets out a clear vision and mission for the Institute, identifying core activities and goals that empower members and enhance the unique value delivered by a successful architectural profession.

Jennifer Cunich, Chief Executive Officer

Jennifer Cunich has been Chief Executive Officer of the Australian Institute of Architects since May 2016. Jennifer is a leading figure in property with over 30 years’ experience in business and property sectors. Since commencing with the Institute she has undertaken an extensive organisational restructure and review of the Institute’s national policies.

Prior to joining the Institute, she was the Victorian Executive Director of the Property Council of Australia for more than 20 years. As Victorian Executive Director of the Property Council of Australia, Jennifer Cunich was the voice of Australia's multi-billion dollar investment property industry in Victoria. One of Australia’s most experienced property lobbyists, Jennifer has spearheaded some of Victoria’s most successful property advocacy campaigns.

Jennifer is also a champion of promoting women in the property industry. Under her leadership the Victorian Division established the Women and Diversity Committee in 2015, charged with identifying leaders in the sector and promoting their contribution to the industry. Through this committee, dedicated events, initiatives and professional development for women have been delivered. The important contribution of women in the industry is starting to receive the recognition it deserves.

Clare Cousins FRAIA, National President

Clare Cousins established her Melbourne practice, Clare Cousins Architects, in 2005. Engaged in projects large and small, the studio has a particular interest in housing and projects that nurture community.

She has also contributed in Victoria as a Chapter Councillor, Small and Medium Practice Forum member, Member Services Committee (chair), AA Editorial Committee (chair), Constructive Mentoring Program mentor and state and national awards juror. Clare was recognised for her work and professional engagement in 2013 with the Institute's National Emerging Architect prize.

Clare is an inaugural investor in Nightingale and is now undertaking her own Nightingale project, a socially, financially and ecologically sustainable multi-residential housing model where architects lead the project as both designer and developer.

Mission & Vision

To make the world a better place through architecture.

The Australian Institute of Architects exists to enhance the cultural, environmental and economic well-being of the community by:

  • advancing contemporary practice and the professional capability of members, and
  • advocating the value of architecture and architects.

With the perspective of our stakeholders as paramount, we will create an Institute that members value, in partnership with organisations that are strong and aligned with our vision.

Our substantial and effective public policy on architecture and the built environment will influence governments, and the community will understand and value the leadership given by the architectural profession.

We will have highly effective communication with all our stakeholders and exhibit exemplary employment practices and the highest standards of governance.

The Institute will be an innovative, learning organisation, which acknowledges its presence and responsibility in a global context.

We will secure the future of the architectural profession through continuous knowledge development and transfer and by ensuring that members are committed to life-long learning for the benefit of the community.

Financially, we will have the strength to lead, and through effective, timely and transparent financial management, we will ensure accountability to our stakeholders.
